The 28th Shaoxing Lanting International Calligraphy Festival kicks off

On March 24, 2012, the 28th Lanting International Calligraphy Festival kicked off in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province. Shaoxing Lanting Calligraphy Festival is the only themed gala with calligraphy, a masterpiece of UNESCO Intangible Heritage. Shaoxing closest to Hangzhou is a famous ancient city for history and culture. In the circle of academics, Shaoxing boasts a traditional center of Chinese elite culture. A batch of domestically or internationally influential award ceremonies or festivals related to culture and literature are hosted here such as the Lu Xun Literary Prize(鲁迅文学奖), which is awarded by the Chinese Writers' Association, Lanting Calligraphy Award Ceremony(兰亭奖), which will be firstly available next year, as well as Ceremony of Worshipping Da Yu(祭禹), a large rite in memory of Chinese people’s ancestry. This cultural festival lasts 5 days, and a variety of relevant activities or performances will be available, like the public calligraphy show on the City Square of Shaoxing, Exhibition of Calligraphic Masterpieces of last several sessions of calligraphy festival in Shaoxing Museum. The whole festival opening ceremony is hold in Memorial Temple of Wang Xizhi(王右军祠), a highlighted part of Lanting Scenic Area, located in suburb of downtown Shaoxing. This is a classic garden-style cultural center and tourist destination of Shaoxing. Many scenic spots absolutely reveal the quintessential philosophy of Chinese calligraphy. The bamboo forest, white gooses, stele forest and grandfather-grandson stele exhibit the history and tradition of Chinese calligraphy opened by Wang Xizhi, historically called Saint of Calligraphy.
